Sanjeevani Mountain Drop

Dolukanda: The Sanjeevani Tableland & Herbal Lake

Rising like an immense stone table out of the coconut woodlands of the Wayamba province, Dolukanda is one of Sri Lanka's most revered medicinal mountains. Oral chronicles across Kurunegala affirm that when Lord Hanuman carried the Himalayan Dronagiri mountain back to save the lives of Rama's wounded legion, a substantial ridge tore off and plummeted here, creating Dolukanda's characteristic cliff-girt plateau.

The Miraculous Sanjeevani Herbs of Dolukanda

Folk traditions hold that the elusive Mrita Sanjeevani plant—capable of revitalizing breath in the critically wounded—continues to grow hidden in the high rocky crevices of Dolukanda. The summit plateau is densely populated by rare medicinal herbs, including wild ginger, wild cinnamon, rare bryophytes, and fragrant botanical mosses not found in the surrounding lowland plains.

At the center of the plateau lies Ambalangala Pokuna, an ancient freshwater reservoir whose waters are steeped in fallen medicinal leaves, believed by local villagers to cure chronic skin diseases and physical fatigue.

Trekker Guide & Route Details

  • Trailhead: Starts near the Dolukanda Raja Maha Viharaya in Hiripitiya, Kurunegala.
  • Trek Duration: Approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the summit tableland.
  • Key Landmarks: Welekulugala cliff, the ancient rock-cut hospital ruins, and the sacred natural spring.

Archaeology & Ancient Royal Sanatorium

In addition to Ramayana folklore, Dolukanda preserves the ruins of an ancient monastic hospital and retreat dating back to King Dhatusena (5th Century CE) and King Vijayabahu I. Monolithic medicine stone troughs (*beheth oru*), ancient rock inscriptions, and secluded meditation caves attest to centuries of herbal medicine practice atop the mountain breeze.

The western precipice, known as Welekulugala (The Cloud Rock Cliff), commands a breathtaking 360-degree vista over the Deduru Oya reservoir basin and the distant central highlands.

Pairing with North-Western Itineraries

Located roughly 20 km northeast of Kurunegala town, Dolukanda can be easily reached when travelling between Colombo and Anuradhapura. It pairs naturally with Wariyapola (the ancient air chariot plain) and Yapahuwa Rock Fortress.
